The smartest man in the world is in town… with a martini in his hand.

But you might not recognise Greg Proops until you hear him speak.

His is the voice that regales iTunes listeners worldwide with weekly podcast instalments under the guise The Smartest Man in the World. And this month, Rolling Stone magazine named Proops’ regular podcast of stand-up material as among the world’s 10 best.

“Podcasts have been revolutionary for comedians,” Proops said yesterday, shaking rather than stirring his preferred tipple. “It goes all over the world, it’s intimate and it gives people who never see me the chance to hear me rattling on.”

See Proops in person next week at the Athenaeum, for a short run of shows at his second Melbourne International Comedy Festival (April 20-24).

In the US and UK, Proops is famous for his improv work on TV and recently joined the cast of Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza. Shot at the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, Improv-A-Ganza features an impromptu guest performer. Actor Charlie Sheen was partying at the casino and Proops invited him on stage.

Proops also hosts his own Hollywood TV chat show and guests have included Flight of the Conchords, Russell Brand and Jeff Goldblum.

Despite the diversions, Proops is passionate about stand-up. “You have a mike, you have control and it’s a wonderful time in your life… I am at home.”
